A riddle

I’ve never heard that one before. He’s not the first philosopher to come through town. They’ve all got something new to say, or so they claim. But credit where credit is due. That’s a new one.

God will do good to those who do good to Him. He will enrich those who are rich toward Him. So tithe everything — every skein of wool, every sprig of mint — and He will take notice. He will not fail to bless those who bless Him. Health, wealth, honor — it can all be mine if I do what He commands.

I’ve heard that before.

But this one. He can’t be serious. He has it all backwards. Dressed as beautifully as Solomon? In linen, purple, and gold? I don’t see that happening. I don’t see it happening to anyone I know.

The part about eating better than sparrows, even that’s a stretch. We slave away from dawn till dusk and then lay awake hoping we did enough.

He made everyone laugh when he said that you can’t even change the color of a single hair on your head, so don’t even make oaths. That was funny. I keep thinking about that one, too.

But I don’t know where he gets these ideas. It’s not like he’s dressed like Solomon himself. He’s not even much to look at. They had to point him out to me. I hear he’s from Nazareth. His dad was a handyman or something like that. He wasn’t even trained, but everyone calls him a rabbi. Indeed, he seems to know the books better than anyone I’ve heard.

Dressed like Solomon. No, that’s not what he said. He said dressed better than Solomon. Quite a claim. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he was a liar and try to forget about the whole thing. Just one look at him and you know he’s not going to make it very far. Or maybe he’s just a loon. He’s certainly not going to be rich if all he does is go around preaching and treating diseases without asking for payment.

I didn’t even see him heal anyone today.

Whatever. It will all come to nothing. I’m sure.

Dressed better than Solomon.

I’ve never heard that one before.
